Staying Healthy on the Go
Whether you’re headed to the beach this summer, jet-setting to celebrate family reunions, or just traveling for business, staying healthy on the go isn’t as easy as we may think. Sometimes the hardest part is just trying to choose the right options. Traveling can wreak havoc on your diet and your willpower, so plan ahead to avoid starvation, which can lead to bingeing, overeating, and weight gain. Follow these simple steps to keep you on track, feeling great, and staying healthy while you travel.
Pack Your Own Food: Pack a small cooler and fill it with fresh fruit and veggies. Stock it with hummus, guacamole, yogurt, even soups in airtight containers. Bring granola bars, seeds, nuts, and dried fruit for easy travel. And don’t forget the dark chocolate for when you get that hankering for something sweet!
Stop at Local Produce Stands or Farmers Markets: This the perfect place to get fresh, local, and in-season produce. Depending where you are traveling and what time of year it is, you can always find something new and different to try.
Choose “Mom and Pop” Restaurants: These restaurants will have fresher food, healthier choices, and serve made-to-order dishes so you know your food hasn’t been sitting under a heat lamp sopping in its own grease for hours.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water. Aim for 8-10 glasses a day. Switch things up a bit and buy sparkling water or add fresh fruit or mint for taste. Staying hydrated will help you to feel fuller and satisfied longer. Water maintains the immune system, helping to keep it flushed from toxins to prevent you from getting sick.
Keep Moving: Exercise also boosts your immune system. Peruse the airport and window shop. Go sightseeing. Stop at a rest stop and walk around for 15 minutes. Try some Pilates or yoga on the beach. Use the hotel gym. Try something new in the city you’re visiting, rock climbing, hiking, or stand-up paddle boarding.
Re-center Yourself: Most times traveling tends to be filled with a mile-long to-do list and hectic rushing from here to there. Take time to relax, re-center yourself, breathe deep, and enjoy some downtime. Read a book, have a cup of tea, watch the sunset, or just close your eyes and be still for a moment.
With a little planning, these simple ideas will help you maintain good health while you travel.
